Biographies

Taylor Andreas they/she (Ensemble) is a junior Theater major from Portland, OR. Taylor is so excited to be back on the stage as an ensemble member in The Prom! Their recent roles with the UP Theater program include April in Company, Assistant Costume Designer and Hair and Makeup Designer for Twelfth Night, Costume Coordinator for TBA, and Hair and Makeup and Dresser for Peter and the Starcatcher. She would like to thank her parents, partner, and family for all of the support during this rehearsal process and throughout her studies in theater.

Savanna Baird she/her (Assistant Director) is an alumni of UP Theater from San Diego, CA. She is excited to assistant direct for the first time. Prior to this production, she has acted in projects including an outdoor production of Julius Caesar, a new works production called Coming Up for Air, and Everybody at UP Theater. David De Lyser he/him (Musical Director) is Director of Choral Activities and Professor of Music at UP and is from Minneapolis, MN. Dr. De Lyser joined the University of Portland faculty in 2010In addition to serving as music director and pit orchestra conductor for campus musical productions, he also conducts the University Singers and Chamber ChoirHe teaches composition, orchestration, conducting, music theory and musical theater courses. Outside of the University, he is the artistic director and conductor of the Choral Arts Ensemble of Portland and maintains a busy schedule of guest conducting and adjudicatingHe holds graduate degrees in conducting and composition from the University of Northern Colorado and the University of Portland, and a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Business from Minnesota State University Moorhead. Dr. De Lyser is a published author and award-winning composer whose works have been commissioned, premiered and performed by professional, collegiate, community and high school performing ensembles across the country.

Zoe Diao she/her (Dee Dee Allen) is a first-year Biology and Theater double major from Las Vegas, NV. Zoe is so extremely excited to be a part of and share The Prom with the world. She has been in theatre since her freshman year of high school and has played roles such as Maya in TBA, Gretchen in Mean Girls, and The Bearded Lady in The Greatest Showman. She would like to thank her parents and brother for always supporting and inspiring her to follow her dreams, her dog for always being so cheerful and full of love, her fellow cast and crew members for always putting 110% into everything and their encouragement, Sarah Maines for all her support and always providing a safe environment to learn and grow, and Andy for trusting in her to take on this role. Hilario Corral Flores he/him (Nick) is a first-year Theater Design major from Buckeye, AZ. This is Hilario’s first year at the University of Portland, and he is very excited to work with everyone in the company. He is a design major striding to become a lighting designer in the future. Hilario did nine theatrical shows in high school and a few other performing arts shows as well. He acted in all nine and did tech for all nine as well.

Sydney Gannon they/them (Mrs. Greene) is a senior Communication Studies major with a Theater minor from Santa Cruz, CA. Some of their previous roles at UP Theater include Sanchez in Peter and the Starcatcher, Ensemble in Bends, Lana in The Last Train, and Hernando in House of Desires. They are also a student filmmaker and currently work as a production assistant at ZP Productions. Sydney is thrilled to take on the challenge of being Mrs. Greene in their final performance on the UP Mainstage. They hope that you enjoy this story of love, pride, and acceptance.

Jeff George he/him (Choreographer) Jeff George trained with Ballet Arts of Minnesota & Broadway Dance Center in NYC. He performed on the East Coast Tour of Sesame St Live & with the Royal Caribbean & Norwegian Cruise Line ships. Jeff has performed with many PDX companies, such as Bodyvox, Polaris, Dancing People, SubRosa, Broadway Rose, Artist Repertory Theater, Pixiedust & Do Jump, where he got to join the company on Broadway. Jeff recently choreographed Drowsy Chaperone at Oregon City High School, Othello with PAC, Urinetown with Stumptown Stages which earned a PAMTA nomination for outstanding choreography, Made To Dance In Burning Buildings with Shaking the Tree Theater, which earned a Drammy award for outstanding choreography, You My Love with Shaking the Tree Theater, and All Together Now, a Netflix film, and most recently Full Monty, Young Frankenstein, It’s a Wonderful Life, Kinky Boots and Cabaret which earned a Broadway World Award for Best Choreography with Stumptown Stages.

Mollie Goldberg she/her (Ensemble) is a junior Theater major from Kalaheo, HI. Mollie is very excited to be part of her first musical here at UP. You may have seen Mollie as the Lady in Twelfth Night, the Narrator in Peter and the Starcatcher, as well as some events held by the Theater Club including the 24-hour play festival and Imminent and Disastrous. She was also in a production of Heathers the Musical last summer in her hometown, which rekindled her interest in music and dance. Mollie would like to thank her family and friends for their support, and Professor Andy for this opportunity. After the school year is over, she is looking forward to studying abroad in London this summer along with some fellow UP theater people, where they will get to perform a series of 10-minute plays in the UK. Although Mollie is still a junior, she has big dreams of pursuing grad school and taking on acting as a professional career. She would also like to mention that she didn’t have the chance to go to prom when she was in high school, so being able to dance in this prom is somewhat like a second chance for her. She hopes you enjoy the show, and that you will dance with us!

Lili Gudgel she/her (Stage Manager) is a theater and environmental studies double major from Seattle, WA. This is Lili’s first time stage managing a main stage production at University of Portland. She was recently the Lighting Designer for the staged reading TBA this fall and was on the stage management team for two senior capstones, The Last Train and Bends, last year. She is very excited for this show and grateful to be a part of it! She would like to thank Andy and Anna for their work on this production as well as her two amazing ASMs Fin and Charlotte. Ricardo Guevara he/him (Mr. Hawkins) is a junior theater and marketing double major from Portland, OR. Ricardo is very excited to share this production with the world. His recent productions include Finn in TBA, Sir Andrew in Twelfth Night, Somebody in Everybody, Brindsley in Black Comedy, and Don Carlos in Los Empeños de Una Casa (House of Desires). He would like to thank his family, friends, girlfriend, the Redmond Academy of Theatre Arts, the Centro de Arte de Teatral CDMX, the theatre department at SHS, and everyone in the University of Portland theater department for supporting him in his artistic journey. Nick Hailer they/she (Kevin) is a senior theater major from Kailua, HI. When Nick imagined their first senior prom, they always thought it would be in their senior year of high school, not college, but better late than never right? Nick has had a lot of fun working on her final show at UP and is overjoyed about the effort that her fellow castmates have put into the show. You may have seen them in other UP shows recently, as roles such as Smee in Peter and the Starcatcher, and Sebastian in Twelfth Night. She'd like to thank her family, housemates, and friends, and just general loved ones in her life for being much appreciated sources of encouragement, and for not laughing in her face when finding out that she wanted to be an actor.

Casey James they/she (Trent) is a sophomore theater and music double major from Bend, OR. Her past roles at UP include Black Stache in Peter and the Starcatcher, Malvolio in Twelfth Night, and LeRoy in The Last Train. She also is the tenor section leader for the UP singers and chamber choir. They are thrilled to bring you this story of queer love, joy and triumph. Christopher Karo he/him (Sheldon) is a senior environmental ethics and policy major from Las Vegas, NV. For Christopher Karo, Portland is not a land of ports, but a town of theatre. It is here that the training to his illustrious career began. His soul was filled with song, his feet with funk, and his eyes with the exuberance of the the-a-tre. Exuberance is his second middle name after all. In The Prom, audiences will get to see him sing, dance, and act his heart out in his last UP production. Get ready, we are so back. 
Joe Koppy, a white man with blonde hair
Joe Koppy he/him (Barry Glickman) is a senior Theater and English double major from Portland, OR. Throughout his time at the university, he has been an active member of the theater department, this being his 12th production that he has worked. Most recently, he worked as Stage Manager for These Shining Lives and served as Wardrobe Manager for Peter and the Starcatcher. He has also appeared onstage as Antonio/Captain in Twelfth Night and Peter in Company. He is very excited to share the story of The Prom and hopes you enjoy the show!

Sarah Maines she/her (Vocal Director) Hailed as a “natural, most charming” performer, mezzo-soprano Sarah Maines’ favorite roles include Margaret in The Light in the Piazza, Claudia in Nine, and Maurya in Riders to the Sea. Dr. Maines is a member of the Portland Opera Chorus and voice faculty at the University of Portland and Reed College. She frequently performs with Portland companies such as Fear No Music, Resonance Ensemble, Broadway Rose Theatre, Lakewood Theatre, and Mock’s Crest Opera. As a practicing singing voice specialist, Dr. Maines administers voice habilitation to singers referred by laryngologists and speech-language pathologists. Dr. Maines holds a BA in music from Berea College and MM and DMA degrees in voice pedagogy from Shenandoah Conservatory. She is a published researcher who frequently lectures on vocal health, pathology, and function. www.themainestudio.com

Riya Mathew she/her (Shelby) is a first-year Biochemistry major with a Neuroscience minor on a pre-medical track from Beaverton, OR. She hopes to become a great neurosurgeon one day, but for now is super excited to help put on this amazing musical. Her most recent roles included Peter/Boy in Peter and the Starcatcher (UP), Mary Poppins in Mary Poppins (VCHS), and Maria in Twelfth Night (VCHS), and she also sings with the Bel Canto Choir at UP. She would like to thank her friends and family for all the love and support and the University of Portland for allowing her to partake in her love of STEM and love of fine arts during her time here so far.

Lily Pounders she/her (Emma Nolan) is a first-year Music major from Hillsboro, OR. The Prom is Lily’s second show with UP after her debut in Peter and the Starcatcher earlier this year. Lily has been heavily involved in theatre from a young age and is thrilled to be continuing her passion for theatre in college. Lily was a part of the thespian troupe at Westview High School where she was involved in many theatrical productions. Her most recent roles at Westview include Elsa in Frozen, Acrobat in Matilda, and Hattie in The Women of Lockerbie. Lily is a Music major with a hope to one day teach others the joy of music. She has competed and placed in many voice competitions. Lily is glad to be in this production where she can bring her love for theatre and music together alongside other wonderful actors and musicians. Lily would like to thank her friends and family for supporting both her acting and personal journeys.

Her most recent role was Adelaide in Guys and Dolls. Her family has supported and encouraged her journey through the arts. She's excited to share the art she loves with anyone and everyone willing to see it.

Anna Rajala she/her (Choreographer, Intimacy Director) is a theatre maker who specializes in facilitating consent-based, collaborative, and inclusive creative spaces. She has a background in intimacy choreography, dance, and devised storytelling. As an educator, she is dedicated to fostering an environment where student artists learn how to advocate for themselves and their boundaries while establishing a personal artistic identity forged from their life experiences, intersecting identities, and values. Recent directing credits include Peter and the Starcatcher and The Wolves at the University of Portland. Her work as an intimacy choreographer was featured most recently in Whitworth University’s productions of The Sound of Music and Gruesome Playground Injuries.

Leah Reed she/her (Ensemble) is a junior elementary education major and theater minor from Twin Falls, ID. Leah is thrilled to have the opportunity to perform in one of her favorite musicals, The Prom, and is ecstatic you are here in the audience! You may recognize her from Peter and the Starcatcher (Grempkin/Ensemble), The Wolves (#2), and How Can I Keep From Singing (Mary Margaret) with UP Theater. Other theatre credits include Bette in The Marriage of Bette and Boo and Florida in Into the Woods. Leah would like to take a moment to acknowledge everyone in the LGBTQIA+ community and say that you are beautiful and perfect and don’t let anyone try to define your unruly heart!

Zora Richardson she/they (Angie) is a Theater and Arts Administration double major from The Dalles, OR. You may have seen her in UP's Peter and the Starcatcher, Twelfth Night, and Everybody, or galivanting about the Portland parks with Original Practice Shakespeare Festival. Zora also serves as the Theater Club Producer and sings with the University Singers. When not performing, Zora enjoys sewing, re-reading her favorite books, and sipping a hot vanilla latte. She hopes you enjoy the show!

Eleanor Sells she/her (Ensemble) is a sophomore Elementary Education major with an endorsement in Social and Emotional Learning, from San Jose, CA. She is in the 3+1 program to get her MAT Senior year. Although she can't major or minor in theater, she is incredibly grateful to have been a part of three shows here at UP: Everybody, The Wolves, and The Prom. Eleanor has been doing theater since she was five and has made some of her favorite memories on stage or in rehearsal. She has had an amazing experience working on The Prom and can't thank the incredible cast and crew enough for making this show great. While she doesn't know what her future in theater looks like, she will always remember her time on stage here at UP. She hopes you enjoy the show!

Branna Sundy she/they (Ensemble) is a Theater and English double major from the Bay Area, CA. Branna is thrilled to be a part of this silly, beautiful, ridiculous, heart-aching show. She recently played Molly/Ensemble in Peter in the Starcatcher, Viola/Cesario in Twelfth Night, and #11 in The Wolves. They’re beyond excited to be doing theatre with this lovely group of people. Kristeen Willis she/her (Lighting Designer) Kristeen Willis is excited to be designing for University of Portland again. She received her BA from Centre College in Danville, KY and received her MFA in lighting design from Wayne State University, Hilberry Company in Detroit, MI. Kristeen is a proud member of United Scenic Artists and has been an educator, a designer (lighting, scenery, sound, props), a technician, a technical director, a production manager and most recently a project manager for commercial lighting controls. She is a Resident Artist with Artists Repertory TheatreShe has designed locally and regionally and has won several Drammy Awards for lighting and scenic design. 

Theater Faculty and Staff

Eric Adams, Scene Shop Manager

Eric Adams (class of '12) has had the pleasure of working here at his alma mater since 2015. Favorite UP credits include crafting sound designs for Good Kids and A Midsummer Night's Dream, and scenic designs for 1959 Pink Thunderbird.  He has worked as a director, designer, and technician at various theatres across Portland including Third Rail Repertory, Portland Opera, Northwest Theatre Workshop, and Artists Rep.

 

Susan Bonde, Costume Shop Manager

Sue Bonde is the costume shop manager for the University of Portland. She worked in Chicago as a freelance costume designer and technician for the Goodman Theater and Light Opera Works prior to moving to Portland. She has designed for A.R.T., New Rose Theatre, and Portland Repertory Theatre, and the Wee Sing children’s videos before joining Michael Curry Design and working on The Lion King on Broadway. Bonde has designed costumes for Portland Opera’s The Return of Ulysses, Albert Herring, La Calisto, Il Ballo delle Ingrate/Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda/Trouble in Tahiti, Galileo, Postcards from Morocco, L’heure Espanogle / L’enfant et les Sortileges, and La Cenerentola. She is the recipient of two Willamette Week Excellence in Theater Awards and two Portland Drammy Awards. Mock’s Crest Opera costume design credits include Iolanthe, Ruddigore, The Pirates of Penzance, Light in the Piazza, and Yeoman of the Guard. Past designs for UP include Tartuffe, Pippin,The Moors, and Twelfth Night

 

Andy Christensen, Instructor, Directing and Acting

Andy Christensen is a fiercely curious artist-educator who specializes in emergent forms of immersive and site-informed theatre that explore the intersection of place and time. In his practice, he builds egalitarian ensembles that create interdisciplinary, research-driven, and process-shaped performances that put audiences at the center of artistic experiences and contextualize performance within community. After receiving his M.F.A. in theatre directing from the Lir Academy of Trinity College in Dublin and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Andy returned to the United States to invest in emerging artists in the Pacific Northwest. He is a founder of Cascadia Art Project and a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society. He has mentored artists in many regional high schools, George Fox University, Pacific University, and most recently at Whitworth University where he was recognized for outstanding integration of vocation in the classroom.

 

Lezlie C. Cross, PhD, Associate Professor, Theatre History and Dramaturgy

Dr. Cross’s directing credits at UP include Twelfth Night, House of DesiresWhere is Home: a Digital Living Newspaper, and As You Like It. At UP, she teaches courses in theatre history, dramaturgy, and playwriting. She is also a professional dramaturg who has worked at regional theatres across America including the Utah Shakespeare Festival, Cincinnati Shakespeare, Classic Stage Company, Actor’s Theatre of Louisville, Oregon Shakespeare Festival where she was the Literary Assistant for five years, and Nevada Conservatory Theatre where she was the Associate Artistic Director. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Washington, her M.A. from the Shakespeare Institute, University of Birmingham, and her B.A. from Whitman College. See more at lezliecross.com

 

Larry Larsen, M.F.A., Professor, Lighting and Scenic Design

This is Larry’s 30th year of teaching at the University.  He has been involved with theater since 5th grade when he played Schroder in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. He teaches courses in Scenic and Lighting Design, Scenic Painting, Film Studies and Visual Art.  He has served the department as theater program director and chair, and just completed 6 years of service as an Academic Associate Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences.  Recent shows he has designed at the University include last year’s productions of Everybody, The Wolves and Twelfth Night. He has designed over 100 shows in his time at UP.  Larry also works as a professional designer for many local theaters.  Recent shows include Arsenic and Old Lace and Blithe Spirit for Lakewood Theatre Company, Snapshots and Don’t Hug Me for Broadway Rose Theatre Company.  He is the resident scenic designer for the Portland Revels a post he has held since 2001.  He has also designed shows for Artists Repertory Theatre, Oregon Children’s Theatre, Northwest Children’s Theatre, Third Rail Repertory Theatre, Portland State’s Opera Program, and Summer Repertory Theatre in Santa Rosa CA.  He served as the producer for Mock’s Crest Productions which presented a summer operetta on campus every June until 2020. Prior to his work at the University he was the design associate for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival – Portland.  He has an MFA in Theater Design from University of Washington, and  when not at UP he is hanging with his wife Caren, his son Mac and his puppy Milo in lovely Northeast Portland.

 

Mindi Logan, M.F.A., Associate Professor, Acting Instructor

Mindi is beginning her 24th year teaching for the University of Portland. Her artistic work at the University includes acting and dialect coaching for productions. Mindi received her MFA from the Professional Actors Training Program at Rutgers University and then worked professionally as an actor in New York and Los Angeles, appearing off-Broadway, in soap operas, sitcoms, and film. Continuing her professional acting career, Mindi has appeared locally with Artists Repertory Theatre, Theater Vertigo, Willamette Shakespeare, Quintessence Theater, Stark Raving Theatre, in commercials, industrials, and voiceovers. Mindi was awarded the Kennedy Center Gold Medallion for her service as the Regional Chair of the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival. Mindi’s husband Hal is a professional musician and composer who also works locally and teaches at the University of Portland.   

 

Gregory Pulver, M.F.A., Associate Professor, Costume and Makeup Design

Professor Gregory Pulver, Theater Program Director, teaches courses in The Creative Process in Visual Arts, Intro to the Art of Theater, Beginning Costume Development and Analysis, Advanced Costume Design and Research, Theater Makeup Techniques. He is also a director and choreographer for plays and musicals for the UP Theater season annually. Gregory holds an MFA in costume design and choreography from Humboldt State University, CA. He is the 1993 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) National Costume Design Winner for his work on Three Penny Opera at Humboldt State. Gregory is currently a Resident Artist at Artist Repertory Theater in Portland where his favorite of many designs include: The Hombres, Broomstick, Cuba Libre, and Foxfinder. He has been a member of the international board of advisors for The Valdez Theatre Conference in Valdez, AK for 15 years and participates as a featured artist mentoring new American playwrights by participating on response panels, providing workshops in design and writing, and by individual mentorship during each festival. In Portland, Gregory has designed both sets and costumes for Bag and Baggage Theatre in Hillsboro, and costumes for Broadway Rose Theatre in Portland.
