In the last six months, I think we have all experienced something similar to Abby in Interlude. While the circumstances are different, I think that right now more than ever we can understand feeling trapped, wanting something different, and needing a break from our lives. Between the pandemic, fires, and online school, our lives feel like they’ve been completely turned upside down. Last year when I requested to direct for my senior capstone, this is definitely not what I was envisioning. However, I couldn't be more proud of the cast and creative team. We have produced something way beyond what I could have imagined when I decided to direct a radio play remotely through zoom. There are members of my cast that I have never met in person and we have people from California to Hawaii, but despite the physical distance, I still have so much love and gratitude for every person involved in this show. In a sort of meta way, this play has served as the interlude that I needed. Having rehearsal to look forward to every night brought a little bit of normalcy back into my life. Thank you for supporting this project, students, and the arts in general. The arts need your support now more than ever. And, so that we can return to the theater in person as soon as possible, please social distance, wear a mask, and vote.
(Hotel Manager) is a junior organizational communication major with a theater minor from Reno, NV (the biggest little city in the world). Her recent roles at the University of Portland include Wren in Five Lesbians Eating a Quiche, Marcie in Dog Sees God, and Jenny in The Christians. When not making a fool of herself on the stage, Madison enjoys playing board games with her friends, crafting, and reading a good book. Above all, she is known for her immense love of slugs that earned her the title of ‘The Slug Queen.’ Madison had a wonderful time bringing the role of Hotel Manager to life and hopes you enjoy this wonderful radio play as much as she does. She would like to thank the director, Haley Hamilton, for her immense kindness, patience, and insightful direction as the cast explored the unfamiliar world of radio plays together.
(Kenneth) is a first-year student from San Mateo, California. He has been involved in theater at Tri-School Productions for four years, and his favorite roles include Jack in Lord of the Flies, The Beast in Beauty and the Beast, and Ren in Footloose. Aidan would like to personally thank all who worked behind the scenes in order to get the show running. Aidan hopes you enjoy the show!
(Harv Harvey/Waiter/Larry) is a senior theater major from Spokane, Washington. Jackson is very excited to start this new year with new styles of theater. Taking things online is something extremely fascinating and slightly scary and he is extremely excited to be in a show with a director, cast, and crew that is willing to take these changes in stride. He hopes you enjoy the show and have an excellent time.
(Abby) is a senior theater performance major with a French minor from Beaverton, OR. Past University of Portland shows include Odysseus/Maid in The Penelopiad, Fastrada/Player in Pippin, Williamina Fleming in Silent Sky, Detective Beck in Boy Gets Girl, and Anna Andreyevna in The Government Inspector. Emmy is so excited to be involved in UP’s first radio play and hopes you enjoy it!
(Bellhop) is a first-year computer science major from Kailua, HI. Nick is very excited to be performing in his first show at UP! Recent shows credits include The Superintendent in The Drowsy Chaperone! and Aramis in The Three Musketeers at Iolani School. He would like to thank everyone who has watched and supported him in the shows that he has done.
(Director) is a senior theater and communication major from Sherwood, OR. She has been seen on the UP stage before in shows such as The Government Inspector, Boeing, Boeing, Pippin, and The Penelopiad. Last year she took a scene to the SDC Directing Competition at KCACTF and made it to the finals. However, this is her first major venture into directing a full show. This is her senior theater capstone, and she is incredibly thankful to the department for supporting her and allowing her to have this experience despite the circumstances. She would also like to acknowledge that this was a collaborative effort, and that she wouldn't have been able to do it without the support and hard work of all those involved with Interlude. She would like to give one final thank you to everyone in her life who cheered her on through this process. In a time of such isolation, your support made her feel like she wasn't alone, and she couldn't have done it without you.
(Stage Manager) is a junior communication and theater major from Torrance, California. Hannah is very excited to have been introduced to the world of stage management for the first time as she usually spends her time on the stage. Some of her credits include Silent Sky, Pippin, The Penelopiad, and Cabaret. She will also be featured in the ensemble of the upcoming piece Where is Home?. She would like to thank the cast for their great attitudes and flexibility and Haley Hamilton for her guidance and patience. She hopes you enjoy the show!
(Shelia) is a senior theater and Spanish major from Chugiak, Alaska. This is Jesi's last year at UP and she is so excited to get to work on the same show with her best friends! Jesi can normally be found on and around the stage: performing, managing, directing, or in a closet full of props and paint, but she is thrilled to be getting to work as a voice actor as her last role here at UP. Most recent credits include directing a completely student-produced production of Cabaret and stage manager and props designer for Inventing van Gogh. She is currently completing an internship with Wooden Boy Productions on the new Netflix stop-motion film Pinocchio. She would like to thank Haley for being an amazing director, pioneer, and role-model during this crazy time, inspiring us all with her dedication and passion for the craft.
(Host) is a sophomore theater and psychology double major from Carmichael, CA. Olivia is so excited for you to hear the wonderful voices that make up this show! Her past roles at the University of Portland include Melantho in The Penelopiad, and Princess Nuala in The Dragon. She is grateful to have had the opportunity to work with so many wonderful and enthusiastic people as they all embarked on this virtual theater adventure! She would like to thank director Haley Hamilton and stage manager Hannah Harrison for their unwavering leadership throughout the ups and downs of new technology, her housemates for all of the laughs and hugs, and everyone who has worked so hard to make this show possible! She hopes you enjoy the show!
