In recent years, the University of Portland has gained a reputation for student applicants who are awarded Fulbright grants to spend year conducting research, attending a graduate degree program internationally, or teaching English abroad. The University of Portland ranked first nationwide among master's institutions with the number of students who won Fulbright grants for several years and continues to rank among the top producing institutions, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Current University of Portland students must have an endorsement from the University to apply; the endorsement is secured by working with the Fellowships and Grants office throughout the application process.
Applications are due to the Fulbright Commission in October, almost a year before a recipient would leave. To ensure a smooth application process, contact the Fellowships and Grants office in the spring. The campus deadline for applying occurs during the third week of fall semester each year; visit up.edu/fellowships for the exact deadline.
