Lauren Tate was a biology major who graduated from the University of Portland in 2022. She is now a field ornithologist at the Intermountain Bird Observatory (IBO) in Boise. The IBO has two banding stations, one of which is one of the best flyways in Idaho (flyway is an established route that birds use during migrations). With her team, she woke before sunrise, and set up nets for dawn. Each bird gets banded, measured, aged, and assessed for overall health. Some of her favorite catches so far are a Northern Saw Whet Owl, Cassin’s Vireos, Great Horned Owl, Calliope Hummingbird, a Lazuli Bunting.
