In the last weekend of October, the UP Theater program presented a spectacular performance of Sanctuary City, a powerful drama by Martyna Majok. Directed by Ricardo Guevara (C/O 2025) as part of his senior capstone project, this production explored the lives of two undocumented immigrants navigating the complex and often perilous reality of post-9/11 Newark, New Jersey. The play delves deeply into the struggles of the characters as they grapple with the arduous pursuit of their dreams as well as the harsh, oppressive forces working against them.
Sanctuary City chronicles the lives of G and B, two young people who take refuge in each other as they fight for a sense of stability and security in a world that is increasingly hostile toward immigrants. Through their relationship, the play highlights the personal cost of living in a society where immigration policy, fear, and hateful rhetoric have turned many marginalized groups into targets for discrimination and violence. As G and B confront the challenges of their undocumented status, their journey is marked by moments of joy, hardship, and loss.
Ricardo Guevara's direction brought a fresh and resonant perspective to the piece, with a strong focus on the need to reshape the dominant narrative about immigrants—moving beyond stereotypes and framing them as fully realized individuals with dreams, desires, and undeniable worth. By highlighting the struggles and resilience of undocumented immigrants, this production aimed to challenge preconceived notions and invite the audience to reflect on the broader societal implications of immigration and the ways in which policies impact real human lives.
Overall, the entirely student-run production of Sanctuary City was not only a testament to the talent and vision of Ricardo Guevara but also a call for empathy and understanding in a time of divisiveness. In a broader sense, it serves as a powerful reminder of the need for compassion and humanity in the face of adversity.
