Back in February, our talented UP choir competed in the Oregon-wide classical singing competition organized by the National Association of Teachers of Singing at Portland State University. Sophomores Taylenne Ubieta Johnson and Brewer Williams earned 2nd place in their respective divisions and advanced to the prestigious Pacific Northwest Regional competition, representing Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and British Columbia.
Taylenne and Brewer, who study singing with Nicole Hanig and work with Lecturer Susan McDaniel as their pianist, delivered performances that showcased their dedication and skill. Additionally, junior Gabi Mootz secured 1st place in her division on Saturday but did not score high enough to move on to the final round on Sunday.
Sophomore Casey James won their division in the Oregon-wide collegiate Music Theater competition run by NATS last November and also advanced to the regional round.
University of Portland has a strong track record in these competitions. Last year, senior Cam Creitz made it to the National finals in the classical division and Junior Emma Wheatcroft reached the National semi-finals in the classical category.
We are incredibly proud of all our students’ preparation and skill and look forward to seeing their continued success in future competitions.
