Lauren Arkoosh graduated from UP in 2016 with a major in Biology and minors in Chemistry and Theater. She went on to earn her Masters in Marine Mammal Science from the University of St. Andrews, and is now working on completing her PhD in Molecular Microbiology and Statistical Ecology. Although there wasn’t any research in her particular field being done at the time in CAS at UP, there were many faculty who helped her find ways to incorporate her interests into other projects, which helped her earn the Holling Scholarship so she could work with NOAA scientists. Lauren says that one of the most important things provided by the College of Arts and Sciences, and specifically her theater minor, is the ability to trustfully present her work to large and diverse audiences, and to confidently defend it. She highly recommends all perspective scientists to take some theater classes to gain more self-assurance.
