In our first session of this webinar series, we heard from Bishop Joseph Tyson and Dr. Maureen O'Connell as they discussed the Synod and Synodality which will be taking place in October 2023 and October 2024. Bishop Tyson and Dr. O'Connell helped us better understand the meaning of synodality and the importance of these events in the life of the Church.  

Most Rev. Joseph Jude Tyson, D.D.

 Most Rev. Joseph Jude Tyson was ordained to the priesthood in 1989.  His degrees include a Bachelor of Arts in Russian and Eastern European Studies as well as Editorial Journalism from the University of Washington, a Masters in International Relations from the University of Washington, a Masters of Divinity from the Catholic University of America, and an honorary Doctorate of Letters from St. Martin’s University in Lacy. In 2005, he was consecrated Auxiliary Bishop of Seattle and named Vicar General.  From 2008-2011, he served as Superintendent of Catholic Schools. He was installed as Bishop of Yakima in 2011 and currently serves as a member of the USCCB’s Committee for Cultural Diversity and Chair of the USCCB’s  Pastoral Care for Migrants, Refugees and Travelers. He was named by Pope Francis to the Synod on Synodality.

Dr. Maureen O'Connell

Dr. O'Connell is Professor and Chair of the Department of Religion at La Salle University, specializing in Christian Ethics. She holds a B.A. in history from Saint Joseph’s University and a Ph.D. in theological ethics from Boston College. She recently authored Undoing the Knots: Five Generations of American Catholic Anti-Blackness (Beacon Press, 2022) and also has written Compassion: Loving Our Neighbor in an Age of Globalization (Orbis Books, 2009) and If These Walls Could Talk: Community Muralism and the Beauty of Justice (The Liturgical Press, 2012), which won the College Theology Book of the Year Award in 2012 and the Catholic Press Association’s first place for books in theology in 2012. Her current research project explores racial identity formation, racism, and racial justice in Catholic institutions of higher education. She serves on the board of the Society for the Arts in Religious and Theological Studies and is a member of St. Vincent De Paul parish in Germantown, where is also a member of POWER (Philadelphians Organizing to Witness, Empower, and Rebuild).

Moderator: David Farina Turnbloom

David Farina Turnbloom has taught at the University of Portland since 2015. He specializes in Liturgical/Sacramental Theology with a special focus on the relationship between worship rituals and ethics. David is a co-founder of the Collaborative Humanities Investigating Religion and Power, also known as the CHIRP Lab. David is the author of Speaking with Aquinas: A Conversation about Grace, Virtue and the Eucharist, which was published by Liturgical Press in 2017. David received a BA in theology from the University of St. Thomas (2006), an MTS from Weston Jesuit School of Theology (2008), a PhD in Systematic Theology from Boston College (2015), and an MBA in Non-Profit management from the University of Portland (2021).

Michael R. Prendergast has nearly 50 years’ experience as a musician and liturgist at the parish, cathedral, and diocesan levels. Michael is an adjunct instructor in the Departments of Theology and Music at the University of Portland. In his semi-retirement Michael still serves as an accompanist and cantor at St. Andrew and All Saints Catholic Churches in Portland. He is the founder of Sacred Liturgy Ministries, a liturgical consulting firm. He holds a master’s in theological studies from Mount Angel Seminary, St. Benedict, Oregon, and a master's in liturgical studies from St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota.
