Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry

acs logoChemistry is a fascinating and dynamic subject that examines atomic, molecular, and macromolecular structure and function using the principles of quantum mechanics, thermodynamics and chemical kinetics. The UP chemistry program educates students across the five traditional sub-disciplines of chemistry (analytical, inorganic, organic, physical, and biochemistry) and teaches them critical thinking and effective communication skills. To achieve our stated learning outcomes, the department employs a rigorous curriculum with a degree program certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and we provide four distinct coursework options that lead to a Bachelor of Science Degree. The dedicated Faculty and Staff are committed to working directly with students and providing them with an excellent education.

The department has an impressive array of state-of-the-art facilities and instrumentation, including the UP Diffraction Center. We utilize this instrumentation across our curriculum and in undergraduate research conducted at UP. We are pleased to be able to attract and retain talented students who move successfully to employment or continue their education in a wide array of graduate programs to include masters and doctoral programs in the chemical sciences and engineering, medicine, pharmacy, and health care fields.

We invite you to explore our programs and to contact us if you have any questions or would like to visit us while you are on campus.

Sincerely,

Rachel Hutcheson, Ph.D.
