Writing Opportunities

Most undergraduates get few opportunities to see their work published, but don't despair! The University of Portland offers its own opportunities for students who wish to see their work on the printed page. The University also has opportunities for students who want to make use of the many cultural options that Portland has to offer.

  • Writers Magazine.  Each Spring the University of Portland's English majors and other students put together Writers, a collection of student essays, pictures, and poems. The journal is then bound and distributed free of charge to all UP students and posted on the Web. This is an excellent opportunity to submit your work and see it on the printed page. Student editors read all submissions and choose the best for inclusion in Writers. For more information, contact faculty advisor John McDonald.
  • Our department blog is an excellent resource for information about what's going on in our program, as well as internship opportunities and pieces about life after graduation with a degree in English. Students gain valuable writing and online publishing experience by managing and editing the blog. Students interested in contributing to the blog should contact faculty advisor Cara Hersh.

Student Organizations

  • Sigma Tau Delta: The English National Honor Society
Sigma Tau Delta members enjoy many benefits such as publishing and internship opportunities, as well as participate in social and networking activities. We induct new members each spring in a festive ceremony, and we encourage members to get involved in literacy and community outreach activities. For more information, contact faculty advisor Lars Erik Larson.
