Students who have completed at least 12 hours of upper-division history and have maintained a GPA of at least 3.5 in their history courses along with an equally strong overall record are invited to join the local chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honors society. As members, students are eligible to present their research at the annual Northwest Regional Conference held every April in various places throughout the Pacific Northwest. Students also have the opportunity to gain editing experience through participation in the department's student journal, Northwest Passages.
Northwest Passages is the student history journal at the University of Portland and is sponsored by the Rho Pi Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society. Published in the spring of each year since 2000, each edition of the journal includes several senior theses as well as a diverse sample of smaller papers completed in history courses offered throughout the academic year. The writings are selected by the editorial team which is staffed entirely by students.
