Ryan Kenton
My research revolves around the human bacterial pathogen Vibrio vulnificus and its close relatives. Specifically, in my lab, we study how it steals iron from a host, how it expels antibiotics, and where it is located out in the wild.
Students conducting this research:
- Collaborate in a research team that will develop new molecular approaches to better understand how environmental conditions influence the dynamics of harmful bacteria blooms
- Learn to safely work with human pathogens and create an assortment of genetic mutations
- Should have ideally completed Microbiology Lecture and Lab, and General Chemistry
- Spend 3-6 hrs/wk during the year and 35-40 hrs/wk during the summer in the Microbiology Lab or out in the field harvesting samples
Fun fact: While Dr. K won’t be singing in front of you, he is always happy to dance in the annual UP Luau!
