Poulami uses a combination of active learning strategies in her classroom. Her favorite strategy is assigning hands-on projects as part of homework assignments. Along with the lecture PowerPoint she uses a model or two in class to engage kinesthetic and visual learners. She believes that a hands-on minds-on approach is very effective in learning new concepts. She emphasizes the common saying - 'practice makes perfect' and encourages students to test themselves with several online quizzing platforms. She sees her role as a facilitator who helps students use their best learning strategies to solidify their understanding of the class material.
In her lab classes, students can be found drawing or coloring structures, quizzing each other, or identifying structures on models and diagrams. Her lab environment is always fun and engaging. Students are encouraged to work in pairs or small groups which allows them to interact, share memorizing strategies and engage in class discussions.
Fun fact: Poulami Mitra matches her jewelry to the topic she is teaching in class!
