We are interested in understanding how signals from the gut impact neuronal activity and downstream behaviors. Our work uses population-based assays, genetics, and microbiological techniques to tackle questions like:
How does the microbiome impact animal behaviors?
What signals are transmitted between the intestine and the brain?
How does stress impact gut health and how does that relate to behavior?
Students will learn basic C. elegans husbandry, microscopy, and many protocols to assess C. elegans behavior and physiology. Students will develop independent projects, foster a lab community, and engage in scientific inquiry through readings and presentations.
Fun fact: Dr. Matty grew up in rural Florida, where she learned how to communicate with alligators and worms.
