Why Study Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies at UP?

  • Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies applies... to everything. Can’t decide between political science and history? Interested in literature but also in sociology? GWSS is interdisciplinary, offering an opportunity to explore the take courses across the College of Arts and Sciences—our faculty teach in philosophy, ethnic studies, theology, international languages & cultures, political science, history, and more. In GWSS, you’ll engage with diverse disciplines, exploring them with and through a feminist and intersectional lens. (This means a wide range of job opportunities—a GWSS degree prepares you for almost anything!)
  • Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies is relevant. Debates, advancements, and challenges to women’s rights and LGBTQ rights continue to occur in the US and around the globe. In GWSS you’ll develop a greater understanding of issues surrounding gender and sexuality in their historical, structural, and institutional contexts.
  • Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies pursues justice. THE GWSS program at UP rests on feminist, anti-racist, and decolonial pedagogies and teaching. It is committed to challenging all forms of oppression. In GWSS, you’ll learn more about how systems of oppression work across lines of gender and sexuality and intersect across lines of race, class, ability and more. In doing so, you’ll also develop knowledges and skills to challenge these intersecting oppressions, and to address the systemic and structural problems that create and sustain them. GWSS prepares students to be change-makers in all areas of life.
