University Orchestra

Welcome to the University of Portland Orchestra! Conducted by Adam Lamotte, the UPO is a full symphony orchestra open by audition to all students across campus, regardless of major. The ensemble is dedicated to exceptional performances of a wide variety of historical and contemporary orchestral literature, including works for string orchestra. Works for chorus and orchestra are performed in conjunction with the university choirs on a regular basis. An annual concerto competition open to all students provides opportunities for the winners to perform as guest-soloists with the ensemble.

Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings from 7-9:30 p.m., reducing most potential class conflicts. There are at least two concerts each semester and the orchestra also performs at the spring undergraduate commencement exercises. Dependent on student interest, opportunities for participating in chamber ensembles are also available.

Concert attire for the orchestra:

Men: Standard black tuxedo, or black suit with white dress shirt and black bow tie
Women: Long black pants, skirt, or dress; black tops

Registration:

Incoming students are encouraged to enroll for MUS 245. Auditions for acceptance and chair placement are held during student orientation (usually the Sunday before classes begin) and during the first few days of the semester.

Auditions

Students interested in auditioning for the UPO should contact Adam Lamotte (503.943.7382) for an audition appointment, or with any questions they may have.

For the audition, please prepare two contrasting excerpts (2-3 minutes each) of at least medium difficulty that show your playing in its best light. These excerpts should be from classical repertoire (etudes, sonata or concerto excerpts, contest pieces, etc.). Please also be prepared to play two-octave scales in keys up to three sharps/flats.

Wind and percussion audition information is available on the Wind Symphony page.
