Welcome

"Solving a problem for which you know there's an answer is like climbing a mountain with a guide, along a trail someone else has laid. In mathematics, the truth is somewhere out there in a place no one knows, beyond all beaten paths. And it's not always at the top of the mountain. It might be in a crack on the smoothest cliff or somewhere deep in the valley."

                                                                                    - Yoko Ogawa, The Housekeeper and the Professor

If you were to ask the faculty members in the Mathematics Department at UP what makes them passionate about teaching, learning, and doing research in mathematics, you might not get the same answer twice. We all find different parts of the discipline exciting, and we all find fulfillment in bringing that excitement into the classroom, into colloquia, and into research projects. Despite, or perhaps because of, these different approaches and passions, we are a collaborative team of colleagues who welcome engagement from undergraduates. We are looking forward to working with you.

Mathematics is not just about calculations, or really long formulas, or solving for x. It's about finding patterns, thinking critically, and solving problems that address both local and global issues. Tied closely to other STEM disciplines, mathematics provides us with both the tools we need and a way to discern what tools to use. Successful mathematics students are creative, persistent, open-minded, and motivated. They are adept at communication and value teamwork. With this set of skills, yes, you will be a highly-desired employee, but more than that, you will be ready to engage with the world, ready to improve humanity, and ready to build communities that will impact our neighborhood, country, and world in positive ways. We'll be proud of you.

As a department, we describe our purpose, vision, and mission in the following way:

Our purpose is to foster belonging and participation in our intellectual community, wherein we model the vitality of teaching and learning by addressing the whole person.

Our vision is to sustain a life-long, collaborative community of mathematical scholars, teachers, and learners, connected globally and locally, in order to empower one another as we engage and transform our world.

Our mission is to evoke curiosity about new ways of thinking, and connect to, collaborate with, and challenge one another as we invite students to contribute to our mathematics community. Through inquiry, creativity, and vital, relevant conversation, we instill habits of abstract and applied mathematical thinking and examine the impact of mathematics on our world.
