Sociology: Curriculum
The sociology curriculum is designed to impart to students an understanding of society and culture as it is organized in various social institutions. The major provides training in the methods of social research and familiarity with the various theories of social organization and social change. The variety of topic areas offered for students in this major include marriage and family, criminology, urban society, gerontology, minority relations, social psychology, gender, social inequality, and the study of culture.
Criminology is an interdisciplinary track of the sociology major that encourages a critical exploration of criminal behavior and the criminal justice system. The program, which includes a year-long educationally directed field experience in the senior year, is particularly appropriate for students interested in law enforcement work or corrections.
