Requirements: Sociology and Psychology Double Major
For students interested in a double major in Sociology and Psychology (which is relatively common because both programs are in the same department and share some requirements) the research methods courses (PSY/SOC 214, Research Methods: Design and PSY/SOC 215, Research Methods: Analysis) count toward both majors. Additionally, up to six upper-division credit hours from courses that are cross-listed with psychology and sociology can count toward both majors. Each of these major programs has a requirement that students either take a capstone course or do a thesis. Double majors have four options: 1) they may take capstone courses for both majors; 2) they may take a capstone course in one major and write a thesis for the other major; 3) they may write two separate theses, one for each major; or 4) they may do a combined psychology/sociology thesis for 4 credit hours (2 in psychology and 2 in sociology), and have all four credit hours count for both psychology and sociology. A double major student who selects the combined-thesis option would be able to count one additional cross listed three-hour course toward both majors. A student who selects this option must have his or her thesis proposal approved in the spring of the junior year by both supervising faculty members and must do the thesis in the fall of the senior year.
