Social & Behavioral Sciences
Any of the faculty in the Department of Social & Behavioral Sciences would be happy to talk to you about major possibilities. The department offers a psychology major, a sociology major, a sociology major: criminal justice track, and a social work major. Most of the relevant information for these major programs is available on the websites of the specific major.
We also offer minors in psychology and sociology. The psychology minor requires PSY 101 plus 15 upper-division hours. That means 15 hours at the 300 or 400 level. Only three hours of non-classroom credit are accepted for the minor. The sociology minor requires SOC 101 plus 15 upper-division hours (at the 300 or 400 level). Only three hours of non-classroom credit are accepted for the minor. We do not offer a criminal justice minor. However, someone who would like a minor in criminal justice may elect to minor in sociology, taking SOC 101 (required for the minor), plus SOC 201 (Introduction to Criminal Justice) as elective credits, then SOC 325 (Cultural Diversity and Cultural Competence), SOC 408 (Juvenile Delinquency), SOC 409 (Criminology), SOC 410 (Corrections), and SOC 444 (Sociology of Deviant Behavior).
Advising Procedures
Each student is assigned a faculty member as an advisor as soon as the student declares a major. These assignments are posted on the bulletin board located next to the dean’s office, BC 161, and also on a bulletin board between BC 142 and 143. Students should plan to meet with their advisors a minimum of two or three times during each semester to discuss current progress, schedule planning, career options, questions about the University, or any other topic. We want to meet you, talk to you, and get to know you, so please come by even if there is no particular problem you want to discuss.
It is particularly important to meet with your advisor prior to preregistration for the following semester to ensure that appropriate courses are chosen. Preregistration takes place in November and March, so plan to stop in for a visit by then if you haven't already been in contact with your advisor. Faculty members' office hours are posted on their office doors, and if those times are not convenient for you, you may make an appointment for another time by phone, by e-mail, or by leaving a note. We consider it very important that you and your advisor plan your course schedule together and that your own advisor signs your registration form. If you are unsure of who your advisor is, you may contact the secretarial office in BC 135 (503-943-7223) or Dr. Duff, BC 138 (503-943-7240).
Your faculty advisor, the department chair, Dr. Duff, and the Dean all have copies of your records in order to track your progress. Remember, though, that it is your responsibility to make sure that you fulfill all of the Core and major requirements in order to graduate. Make sure to obtain a new copy of the UP Bulletin from the Registrar's office (click here for a link) every year so that you are aware of the University's requirements and policies.
