Philosophy B.A. graduates of the University of Portland will be able to:

  1. Engage with significant philosophical problems.
    1. Clearly explain, to a broad audience, the significance of a philosophical problem.
    2. Take a position and defend it with sustained, well-focused, and coherent arguments in writing.
    3. Anticipate an objection to the position defended and reply to it.
  2. Engage in reasoning in context.
    1. Demonstrate an understanding of the historical or cultural context of a philosophical text.
    2. Identify and critically evaluate presuppositions that arise from the historical or cultural context of a primary text.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in the basic concepts of logic.
    1. Distinguish between arguments and non-arguments.
    2. Distinguish between deductive and inductive arguments.
    3. Evaluate arguments in terms of their soundness or cogency.
    4. Identify common formal and informal fallacies.
