Drama: The Production Program
The Drama program at UP produces 4 main stage shows in the course of an academic year. Faculty carefully choose each season to insure that within a student’s four years they are exposed to a wide variety of theatre genres and periods. Musicals and Shakespeare are produced in alternate years. In addition, smaller projects, capstones, one act plays, and graduate work may be added to the season and are usually student directed and produced. Plays are staged in the 300 seat Mago Hunt Theater and the newly opened Mehling Studio Theater.
All students enrolled at the University are eligible to audition and participate in backstage roles. Auditions are held the first week of classes of each semester. Backstage assignments are made directly following auditions. Most majors work in some capacity on each of our productions.
Main stage productions generally rehearse 5 evenings a week for 4 weeks followed by a week of technical/dress rehearsals and 7 performances. Students produced productions rehearse 4 weeks followed by 4 techs and 2-3 performances.
As well as on stage opportunities, all students are encouraged to participate back stage as well. Students run all aspects of the production including set, costume, props, lights, sound, stage management, and front of house.
