Performing & Fine Arts: Programs of Study
The drama Bachelor of Arts program is dedicated to enhancing the knowledge, skills, and opportunities necessary for establishing a life-long association with the theatre. With a number of specific emphases offered from the drama department here at the University of Portland, students are challenged to use their academic background and technical training in the real laboratory of the live theatre.
The goal of the drama Master in Fine Arts program is to help students develop a solid base of knowledge in the primary elements of theater: acting and actor training, dramatic literature and history, and production design. The program offers the only M.F.A. in directing in the state of Oregon, and fosters a close relationship between faculty and students so that much growth occurs through the personalized interaction.
Students who desire a bachelor's degree in music will, by the completion of their program, demonstrate an acceptable proficiency in keyboard, aural, and sight singing skills. In addition opportunities for group and individual performances will be available regularly through participations in Music at Midweek and the many University of Portland ensembles.
Music education Bachelor of Arts students not only master musicianship and general studies, but they also develop skills in specific areas of musicianship as they relate to school-based teaching of general, instrumental, and vocal music.
A Master of Arts degree in Music from the University of Portland helps students achieve professional and scholarly competence in problem-solving and in the evaluation, organization, interpretation, communication, and dissemination of knowledge. The small classes, flexible scheduling, and close relationships with accomplished professors develop individual talents and philosophies to advance one's future goals and aspirations.
