Performing & Fine Arts: Mock's Crest
Mission Statement
Mock's Crest is a semi professional company devoted to a yearly summer production of comic light opera, primarily the operettas of Gilbert & Sullivan, that combines professional singers and musicians with the students, faculty and staff in the Department of the Performing and Fine Arts at the University of Portland. The production company was originally created under the guidance of Dr. Roger Doyle in 1990 with the support of the theatre faculty as his production team. The goal of this organization is to bring quality musical theatre to the University’s campus, the local Mock's Crest neighborhood and the greater Portland area by remounting and reinterpreting these great works of music, and connecting the young performing artists at the University to the larger Portland music community. This Year’s Production: Die Fledermaus
The Program
Each summer, the University of Portland’s semi-professional theater company, Mock’s Crest Productions, stages a production of comic light opera. This year’s featured operetta is Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus, which will be shown on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, as well as two Thursday performances, during the month of June on the University’s campus in Mago Hunt Theater. Evening performances are June 7-8, 14-15, 20-22, 27-29 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees are June 9, 16, 23, and 30 at 2:00 p.m. In addition to the performance, you may also join us for brunch or dinner service and introductory remarks by company members before the show. The meal which is available 90 minutes before each show, is hosted under coverage of a tent on the lawn in front of Mago Hunt Theater and is provided through the University’s food service provider, Bon Appetit Management Company. Snacks and beverages are also available for purchase during intermission.
The Synopsis
Join us for an evening of white lies, mistaken identities, and revenge set in the roaring 20s of New York City. The womanizing Gabriel Eisenstein is convinced by his friend Dr. Falke to postpone a ten-day jail term in order to attend a fabulous party that evening at the penthouse apartment of Orlofsky, a famous bon vivant. Falke hopes to punish Gabriel for a previous encounter. In her husband’s absence, Rosalinda receives her former flame Alfred, but they are soon interrupted as the warden comes for her husband. To protect her reputation, she convinces Alfred to pose as Gabriel and be carted off in Jail in his place. Following instructions from Falke, Rosalinda disguises herself as a Hungarian countess and goes to the party in the hopes of exposing her husband’s philandering ways. But as the champagne flows, so do the misdeeds of our guilty subjects until all is resolved the next morning. The Players
