English: Student Resources
There are a number of opportunities for Humanities students here at the University of Portland. Most undergraduates get few opportunities to see their work published, but don't despair! The University of Portland offers its own opportunities for students who wish to see their work on the printed page. The university also has opportunities for students who want to make use of the many cultural options that Portland has to offer.
The English Society |
A club on campus for English types who wish to gather together and pontificate about their Englishness. Group outings include Scrabble Nights and excursions to local literary events. The members of the English Society oversee the production of the UP journal, Writers, every Spring. For more information about the English Society, please contact Dr. Genevieve Brassard - brassard@up.edu - or view the English Majors Handbook. Visit Buckley Center 235 for a printed copy of the handbook that includes the worksheet. |
The Writers Journal |
Each Spring the University of Portland's English Society puts together Writers, a collection of student essays, pictures, and poems. The journal is then bound and distributed free of charge to all UP students. This is an excellent opportunity to submit your work and see it on the printed page. Members of the English Society as well as selected professors review all of the submitted work and choose the best student work to be included in that year's journal. More information about Writers is available by viewing the English Majors Handbook. Visit Buckley Center 235 for a printed copy of the handbook that includes the worksheet. |
English Readings & Lectures Series |
Each semester the English Department hosts a lecture series here at the University. Esteemed novelists and poets are invited to give readings for the students and faculty on campus. Often, the coordination of these events is structured to bring writers whose books have been read in courses offered here at the University of Portland. This is a unique opportunity for students to meet authors and hear them read their own works. |

|
The Northwest Undergraduate Conference on Literature was put into action in 2004 by the Department of English at the University of Portland to offer undergraduate students a chance to attend a literary conference and present their work. The conference is designed to emulate the types of literary conferences available to Masters and Doctoral students and professors. For more information, click on the NUCL logo to see the website for this event. |
The Foreign Film Club |
This is a club for people who like movies, yet find themselves tiring of the same Hollywood plot time and time again. In the fall of 2003 a group of pioneering students from the University started the Foreign Film Club in order to better use this wonderful city where we reside. Each semester, the club presents opportunities for its members to see foreign films at a variety of exciting Portland venues. In the Spring of each year, the club is allotted funds to take its members to the Portland International Film Festival where new movies from anywhere across the globe are showing. |
