Communication Studies: Program Objectives
Communication Studies graduates from the University of Portland will be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of communication theory and praxis within dimensions (ethical, social, legal, technological, relational, and cultural) key to the student’s major focus.
- Demonstrate oral communication skills expected of a future professional in the field, including abilities to apply theory, speak in public, persuade, inform, and engage others, use presentational technologies, collaborate and negotiate, facilitate analytical decision-making, manage conflict, interview, and navigate cultural barriers.
- Demonstrate written communication skills expected of a future professional in the field, including abilities to apply theory, write for specific audiences and situations, write informatively and persuasively, and write with economy and precision
- Demonstrate communication research skills expected of a future professional in the field, including abilities to apply theory to interpreting, evaluating, and conducting research.
- Demonstrate understanding of values central to the discipline, including ethics, respect for diverse society, civic participation, and freedom of expression.
