Communication Studies: Speech and Debate Union
University of Portland's Speech and Debate Union attracts students from all corners of the University. Students participate in a number of tournaments throughout the year. In addition the team has sponsored International Public Forums on campus. Speech and Debate is an excellent way to hone presentation skills for career purposes, for everyday life, and for fun! February 2013
9th annual Oregon State University tournament against 15 regional colleges and universities. Katie Husk and Katie Wilson placed in the top 10 of the 85 Open Division debaters. Caleb Patterson placed in the top 6 of the 35 competitors in the Novice Division of the Extemporaneous Speaking event.
December 2012
Orv Iverson & Krista Bacon-Vickery Memorial Forensics Tournament at Clark College in Vancouver, Washington:
· Anna Murphy (Business) won 1st place speaker in the Novice Division of Debate and finished with a Bronze award
· John Russell (Civil Engineering) advanced to the elimination rounds of Debate winning a Silver award
· Beau Woodward (Economics) advanced to the elimination rounds of Debate winning a Bronze award
· Arthur Hammer(Business) advanced to the elimination rounds of Debate winning a Bronze award
· Katherine Wilson (Political Science) won 2nd place speaker in the Open Division of Debate and advanced to the elimination rounds wining a Bronze award, and won 2nd place in the Open Division of Extemporaneous Speaking
· Elizabeth Hartley (Biology) won 3rd place speaker in the Open Division of Debate
· Nikki Carter (Civil Engineering) won 2nd place in Open Division of Impromptu Speaking and 3rd place in the Open Division of Extemporaneous Speaking
In addition, the University of Portland team won 3rd place overall in the tournament among participating four-year schools.
November 2012
Lower Columbia College Speech and Debate Tournament. Nursing student, Elizabeth Hartley won Gold in the Senior / Open IPDA Debate; Arthur Hammer took Bronze in Novice IPDA Debate; Nikki Carter won 1st place honors in Novice Extemporaneous Speaking; Anna Murphy earned 3rd place in Novice Impromptu Speaking; Katie Wilson was a Finalist in Open Extemporaneous Speaking; and Beau Woodward (Finalist in Open Editorial Commentary. Our combined effort earned us the 3rd Place Team Award. This was truly a team effort. See the photo below. Our Union members are helping Elizabeth Hartley prep for her Gold Medal round against Whitworth. A living demonstration of esprit de corps.
October 2012
Steve Hunt Classic Speech and Debate Tournament held at Lewis and Clark College:
· Elizabeth Hartley advanced to the Quarterfinal Round (Top 8) of the Junior Division of IPDA Debate
· John Russell advanced to the Quarterfinal Round (Top 8) of the Junior Division of IPDA Debate
· Katie Wilson placed 6th in the Junior Division of Extemporaneous Speaking
· Arthur (Bo) Hammer placed 6th in the Novice Division of Impromptu Speaking
· Alaina Bever placed 6th in the Novice Division of Informative Speaking
